BlaQyard is a collective of Black + Queer (BlaQ) artists based in Oakland and initially formed in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We took that global hiatus to field an initial call for support and draft home as a blank canvas to envision what we desire for ourselves collectively and independently, our home, and our community.
In it’s current state — BLAQyard is an ashram, a sanctuary and sacred site that prioritizes the growth, expansion and transformation of Black, Queer and Trans artists, ritualists and creatives.
This iteration of BlaQyard has been collaborating for 2 years with connections dating as far back as 5 years interpersonally. In this time the group has created healing spaces via weekly sound baths, ritual performances, rage rooms, community dinners, workshops, celebrations and community land stewarding days at our home and community space BlaQyard as well as in community venues and spaces within Oakland. More specifically, our last year has been the most productive within the 7-year-old collective, originally founded by Chibueze Crouch, Gabrielle Christian, and additional Black, queer and trans artists living in the collective home.

The Esther’s Orbit Room Cultural Revival Project is EB PREC's pilot mixed-use project. What started as a vision during from a 2019 Black Economics Salon we hosted, became an entirely new model that will forever change what community development and financing looks like.
Esther's Orbit Room & Cultural Arts Center will become a cultural and economic asset for Oakland and the Black Arts Community for generations to come. Our commercial & residential programming is developed in partnership with Black West Oakland residents, neighborhood organizations, and local culture-keepers.
Together, we are creating space for arts & culture-based businesses to refine their ideas and build a collective future for West Oakland and the 7th Street Cooperative Cultural Corridor.

Through a regenerative, tiered structure, the AfroPortals Project Space & Archive (AfroPortals) fosters resiliency and builds power in communities deeply affected by racialized trauma and state-sanctioned violence by supporting the current cultural environment with the physical presence of a resource portal.
This interdisciplinary site-specific prototype is trauma-and-joy-informed, and centers culturally resuscitative efforts led by Black artists, curators, archivists, culture-keepers and others whose creative labor saves lives. AfroPortals anchors our vision of a just community by creating an environment where BIPOC arts laborers and educators are protected, honored and fully invested in.

Our mission is to build power through culture. We amplify the voices and lives of artists, and celebrate the culture of everyday people. Our vision and creative practice embodies the bold, curious, and unapologetic spirit of our namesakes Betty Mabry Davis and Yoko Ono.
We value art making as a form and function of activism, self-determination, community transformation, and cultural resilience. We are dedicated to amplifying the work and lives of Black, Brown, Immigrant, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ artists and communities.

Formed in 2014, the Black Cultural Zone was created to counter decades of disinvestment and the displacement of Black people and businesses in East Oakland. Centering Black arts and culture within a community development framework, the East Oakland Black Cultural Zone Collaborative was established by Eastside Arts Alliance and local nonprofits to lead this work. The Collaborative designated a 50-block area—from High Street to the San Leandro border—as the Zone and focuses on cultural strategies, community engagement, and art-driven activism.
The Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 84-3885205) established in 2019. We lead community-driven projects that empower Black residents, culture, and businesses to thrive, particularly in East Oakland. We innovate, incubate, inform, and elevate to create spaces where Black life and culture flourish.
We focus on serving current and legacy East Oakland residents, artists, entrepreneurs, and organizations while benefiting the broader Oakland community. Our work addresses the lasting impact of disinvestment, displacement, and economic inequity by tackling barriers to wealth, ownership, and opportunity. -
EB PREC facilitates BIPOC and allied communities to cooperatively organize, finance, purchase, occupy, and steward properties, taking them permanently off the speculative market, creating community controlled assets, and empowering our communities to cooperatively lead a just transition from an extractive capitalist system into one where communities are ecologically, emotionally, spiritually, culturally, and economically restorative and regenerative.
